It is summer!
What could be better than a shady seat, a cool drink and a great book in hand?
Keep your kids reading all summer long.  Check back often for fresh book suggestions for your kids, and never be without a wonderful story.

  1. Hi Laurel,

What a fabulous idea. Thanks so much for posting these.

After reading 'The One and Only Ivan' in book club, we were inspired to read more Katherine Applegate books. We just finished 'Home of the Brave'- which was enjoyed almost as much as 'The One and Only Ivan'.

Any other suggestions you'd have of a similar genre would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Lark (Chac's Mom)

PS- when I was around this age I remember enjoying the books 'Bridge to Terabithia' and 'Island of the Blue Dolphins'.

    Enjoy your summer!

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I was so pleased with "The One and Only Ivan"- it was such a hit that I did a Girls' Book Club with it too. I will check out "Home of the Brave"! In the meantime, Chac might like "A Dog's Life" (Ann Martin) about a stray dog and the troubles he faces in the form of hostile people and animals on his way to a secure home. Also, "The Island Horse" (though a female main character) is about wild horses on Sable Island. I know Chac likes ocean creatures - it has a few oceany scenes too!

  2. Thanks for sharing these great books. Matthew (grade 3) has really just started to enjoy reading independently in the past couple of months - and I have to be honest, it was Diary of a Wimpy Kid that did it for him! That being said the Zac Power is another great series for boys in particular (it's on the Grade 2 shelf).

I believe you offered the Boy's Book Club for Grade 3 this year - any chance you'll be offering it for Grade 4 as well next year? Finding great books for boys in grade 3/4 is such a challenge!

    1. I would like to offer more 6 week book clubs next year- they were a great hit. I am reading like crazy to have a good stack of excellent options. It is just so great getting to know the kids in a smaller group, and they were all really motivated to do their reading too.
For sure the Wimpy Kid is a great launching series for that age group. I agree about Grade 3/4 boys- I have to work extra hard to build those lists. Any suggestions welcomed!!
