Boy vs. Beast: Aquatan
by Mac Park
75 pages

The perfect bridge between early readers and chapter books for boys!  The story is basic: Kai is a border guard; with his robot dog BC3 and many other techie gadgets, he protects Earth from threatening beasts in surrounding territories.  With big fonts, sound effects, diagrams, a comic strip section, lots of battles and just 75 pages, this provides chapter-book satisfaction, without discouragement.  First in the series.  Grade 2.

  1. Hi Laurel,

Thanks so much for this great resource. I am just checking in to get some ideas for books for our upcoming car trip. Do you have any other suggestions for easy novels for Jonah (going into grade 3). He loves graphic novels, but goes through them so fast & I'd love to find a few books that he could really sink his teeth into without being put off by the length or font size.

I also had a quick look through Jonah's book shelf for some books we've loved this past year. Here are a few of them:
Able's Island (W. Stieg), The Fog Mound (triolgy by S. Schade), Sir Seth of Thistlewaite (triolgy by R. Thake), Zorgamazoo (all in rhyme & magical - by R.P. Weston), Half Magic (E. Eager). Time Cat (L. Alexander), The Dog who Wouldn't Be (F. Mowat).

For younger kids, we all loved Alexander McCall Smiths books about Akimbo set in Africa.

Hope you're having a good summer.

ps I'd love to see the grade 3 book club back again this year!

    1. Hi Jenny,
Thanks for your comment! I think it is great to encourage him into some longer books; after checking my list for Gr. 3, I think I need to build up that area. I don't know if he has tried it, but I would absolutely recommend "The One and Only Ivan" as a great read with short chapters, great content (animals' point of view and zoos), and long (300 pgs). It is a bit on the sad side, but good for talking about. "Fangbone" (also on the Gr. 3 list and admittedly a graphic novel) is hilarious and has 2 volumes that are out. My boys read passages out loud to each other as we read it. Another author you might want to consider is Gordon Korman- not everything is for your target age, but the "Titanic" trilogy is reasonably short and well-paced in terms of action. It was pretty popular this year with that age group.
Glad to hear he read "Zorgamazoo"! What an interesting story - lots of fun to read out loud.
Hope this is helpful to you! Have a great trip. And yes, Gr. 3 Boys Book Club is in the planning for this year.

  2. Thanks so much, Laurel. The bookseller on Kingston Road also suggested Cornelia Funke's Ghosthunters trilogy and Philip Ardagh's Eddie Dicken's trilogy - so, I think we're stocked up for a long car ride.

Hope you're having a great summer.
